Sailing Travel Insurance

Sailing Travel Insurance

Sailing holidays are some of the most exciting trips you can venture on. They give you the freedom of the ocean to explore the world and travel from place to place, seeing new things and experiencing different cultures.

Whether you prefer being moored in luxurious harbours like Monaco or the Greek islands, or being out at sea and facing the challenges of the waves, there’s no doubt that a sailing holiday is both enthralling and adrenaline-pumping.

Having the right insurance for a sailing holiday is important, ensuring you remain protected while you’re on open waters and navigating the seas. With comprehensive coverage designed for the challenges and risks associated with sailing, you can rest assured that you are covered, focusing your attention on enjoying your adventure on the water.

WHY DO I NEED SAILING TRAVEL INSURANCE?

If you’re lucky enough to be able to go on sailing holidays then you’ll be aware that certain risks are unique to waterborne sports. Of course, with good planning and a well-trained crew, 99% of the time you’ll be enjoying one of the most exciting and luxurious holidays you’ll ever experience.

However, in the event of an accident or injury onboard, you want to know that you’ll get the compensation and cover you need to get yourself back to health and return home safely.

That’s why finding a suitable sailing travel insurance policy before you head on your adventure on the water is essential.

WHAT TYPE OF SAILING TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY DO I NEED?

Just like any adventure holiday insurance, sailing insurance policies come in different forms to suit different travellers’ needs and plans. At Navigator Travel, we have you covered with a great range of sailing holiday insurance policies for different durations and activities.

If your sailing holiday is just for a week or two, then our short-term single-trip travel insurance will be the most suitable. Offering cover for individual trips up to 62 days in length, this policy can cover sailing, and even other sports and activities like skydiving and winter sports for additional upgrades.

However, if you’re going on a more adventurous trip and are planning to be sailing the high seas for more than 45 days, then our long-term travel insurance policies will be a better choice. However, Action Plus activities, such as offshore sailing outside territorial waters, are not covered as standard on our Long Stay Single Trip policies. It is possible for you to request this cover from our underwriters, though. Just contact us for a quote

We offer a number of different insurance policy options. Whether you need insurance for dinghy sailing on inland waterways, or if you are a transoceanic yachtsman, we have a suitable sailing insurance policy for you.

WHAT DOES A SAILING TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY COVER?

Before you invest in insurance for your sailing holiday, you’ll need to know exactly what is covered when you’re enjoying your time onboard a vessel. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect to be included in your sailing holiday insurance policy with us:

Medical Expenses

Our travel insurance policies will cover you if you need medical attention or treatment while on your sailing holiday, including emergency care.

Cancellations

If you have to cut your holiday short or cancel before you depart, you could be covered for your sailing trip. This is normally in the case of events and circumstances that are out of your control, such as death or illness.

Damage, Loss, or Theft of Baggage and Belongings

If your baggage or belongings are lost, damaged, or stolen en route to your sailing holiday, and it’s not your fault, your sailing insurance policy will let you make a claim.

Activities and Sports

Here at Navigator Travel, our sailing holiday insurance policies can cover you for a wide range of sports and activities beyond just sailing. Our insurance policies offer cover for a selection of low-risk activities and other water sports, so you can embrace new and exciting experiences during your travels.

WHAT DOES A SAILING TRAVEL INSURANCE POLICY NOT COVER?

While you need to be aware of what’s covered as part of your travel insurance for sailing, you also need to know exactly what you won’t be covered for:

Extreme Sports and High-Risk Activities

If you wish to partake in high-risk activities or extreme sports during your sailing holiday, you’ll need to opt for a higher level of cover or select add-ons to gain the level of cover you need.

High-risk activities or extreme sports include rugby, polo, skydiving, or high-altitude trekking. Equally, if you plan to go skiing or snowboarding when you’re not on the water, you’ll normally need additional winter sports cover, as this is often not included as part of our standard policies.

Ship-to-shore Evacuation

There is no cover for ship-to-shore evacuation within our sailing holiday insurance policies, which is more relevant in the case of offshore sailing.

Loss of Valuables Overboard

Our sailing travel insurance policies will also not cover you for any valuables that are lost overboard or water-damaged whilst sailing. Therefore, it’s important that you keep your electronic devices and important possessions safe and away from wet conditions at all times.

Personal Liability Claims

Insurance for sailing holidays with us will not cover any personal liability claims arising from driving or riding motor vehicles, boats, or animals. Therefore, it’s all the more important that you act in a safe and responsible manner when you’re both on and off your vessel.

Damage to Vessels

If you cause any damage to the vessel you’re spending your holiday on in any way, our sailing insurance policies will not cover you, regardless of whether the vessel is rented or chartered.

At Navigator Travel, we want to be sure that you get suitable sailing travel insurance for your trip. If the details of our policies aren’t clear, or you’re not sure which policy is best for a sailing holiday, then get in touch and we will help guide you through the process. You can contact our team today who will be happy to assist you.

Of course, if you know exactly what you want, then you can get a quote online right now!

DO I NEED SPECIALIST COVER FOR OFFSHORE SAILING?

If you plan to take part in off-shore sailing during your holiday, you’ll need to carefully consider the type of sailing travel insurance policy you purchase.

For those who don’t know, offshore sailing involves sailing in open water, away from the coastline, usually for extended periods. This may involve crossing entire oceans, taking part in races, or exploring lesser-visited remote destinations.

It is possible to cover offshore sailing, but this is not a part of standard travel insurance policies. Here at Navigator Travel, you can purchase additional cover for offshore sailing with our Action Plus Rates.

If you have any questions regarding our sailing travel insurance policies, you can contact our dedicated team at 0161 973 6435, sales@navigatortravel.co.uk, or online. Let us help you make your sailing experience a reality by securing the best sailing holiday insurance for you.

SAILING TRAVEL INSURANCE: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT DO I DO IF I’M INJURED DURING A SAILING HOLIDAY?

If you are injured onboard a sailing vessel, you need to call or visit the appropriate emergency services and seek medical attention. As your sailing holiday insurance covers medical expenses and emergencies, you can rest assured you’ll be covered as you rest and recover before coming home.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I NEED EMERGENCY SERVICES WHILE I’M AT SEA?

If you need urgent medical attention while you’re at sea, you need to ensure there’s nothing on board that could cause you further harm, and that you and your vessel are safe. The next step is to contact the local coast guard or rescue services. When you can, you’ll then need to call our team who will be able to assist where they can.

HOW SHOULD I STAY SAFE ONBOARD A SAILING VESSEL?

Basic tips for staying safe during your sailing holiday include ensuring all essential and navigational equipment is fully functioning and not faulty before you venture out onto the water. It’s also important that you have ensured before your departure that the vessel you’re on is safe for sailing, and has passed any necessary tests to be deemed ok to sail.

Finally, make sure that you choose the right sailing travel insurance policy for your needs to give you the peace of mind that you’re protected while at sea.
